A Moment in Time

An elephant balances on its trunk at the entrance to Nanjing's Yuhua E-Park, in the heart of China's Software Valley. A Moment in Time is an inverted, abstracted elephant held in a single impossible pose, rising 12 meters (about 39 feet).

Up close, the animal breaks apart into more than 15,000 individual "pixels" of brushed stainless steel and red-painted elements, each fastened into place with nuts and bolts. The pixel is a nod to the digital world around it. Lawrence imagined the elephant materializing out of its surroundings, the way scattered information gradually gels into a whole. Elephants have long stood for wisdom, knowledge, patience and strength. Here the form is caught mid-formation, a moment that isn't yet complete.
