In a sunken plaza at Uniwalk, a new mixed-use development in Shenzhen, a dragon rises up through the floor. Beyond Reflection stands 16 meters tall and spans two levels: the body and legs sit below ground, while the head, back and tail break the surface above, with claws gripping the balustrade. Lit and wreathed in mist, the dragon appears to float.
Lawrence drew on the dragon of Chinese mythology, a creature associated with power and happiness. The sculpture is made entirely of mirror-polished stainless steel. The body is panel-beaten, while the faceted head, claws and tail are welded. He described the form as emerging formless, like an apparition, before its fluid shapes resolve into something recognizable. The work holds that moment in steel.
